What does a Dietitian do?

Working as a dietitian: What you should really know about us

As a dietitian who has worked in the field for a number of years, it is extremely important to remain true to clients. There have been countless moments where we have been questioned as to why we veered into dietetics as a career path - WELL, here we are to debunk myths and deconstruct what it REALLY means to be a dietitian.

We aren’t just “weight loss” fairies

It is OKAY to have a specific goal, I mean we are here for that - but I promise you that weight-loss and diet plans are not the sole purpose of our job. This means we cover a range of topics such as: women’s health and fertility, food allergies and intolerances, sports nutrition and irritable bowel issues: the list goes on. In this process we consider a range of lifestyle factors, habits, your medical history and medications to develop advice that caters specifically to YOU. Outside of the clinic, we also develop and review menus for facilities to ensure well nourished residents, do home/aged care visits and work in schools doing health promotion, teaching nutrition education and helping kids to develop cooking skills that will set them up for life.

We see you as more than just a client

Your commitment to our service is something that keeps us going into work everyday. We TRULY love what we do and we thrive off results and improvements in your overall health, therefore we promise to provide a service that you can rely on (this may come with a little tough love - but as they say honesty is the best policy!).

We are science nerds

I promise you that a whopping 5 years of study and countless hours spent researching new science is all worth it. We are foodies - YES, and I can’t say that we don’t spend the majority of our time out of clinic eating delicious food, because we do. BUT, you should know what comes along with the information stored in our brains and that is countless hours of research to give you the best possible advice and be the most encouraging and inspiring mentor in your journey.

A word of advice on behalf of us: never hesitate to see a dietitian, and ALWAYS question dietary information amongst social media platforms. It’s always best to trust an Accredited Dietitian as a reliable source of information.
