Popular Diet Trends: Juice Plus+

Chances are you have heard of the popular health company, Juice Plus+ but what exactly is this diet trend? What does the research say? And is it worth your money? In this blog we break it down.

What exactly is Juice Plus+?

Juice Plus+ sell a range of fruit and vegetable capsules, gummies and shakes made from different combinations of over 30 fruits, vegetables and grains which are dehydrated, ground into a powder and made into the capsules and gummies. A pack of vegetable, fruit and berry blend capsules will set you back approx. $120 / month.

Juice Plus+ claims their products ‘bridge the gap between what you should be eating and what you do eat, leading to a healthier lifestyle.’

What Does the Research Say?

In a nutrition article ‘The Truth About Juice Plus+’ written by The Nutrition Guru and The Chef, Nutritionist Tara and her team took a further look into the ingredients found inside the Vegetable Blend Capsules. They found one vegetable blend capsule to contain 0.01945 grams of carrot or 3% of one serve of carrot, according to a 75g gram serve as per The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. The capsules contain considerably small amounts of fruits and vegetables when compared with consumption in the diet.

The company (Juice Plus+) has many research articles on their website showing potential benefits of taking Juice Plus+ however, many of these studies were completed in small groups of people whom were most likely not meeting nutritional requirements prior.

Some studies show supplementation with concentrated fruit and vegetable capsules (Juice Plus+) can be beneficial and improve health outcomes for those who typically have a low fruit and veg intake.

The Bottom Line

Consuming serves of fruits and vegetables in line with recommendations from the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating will ensure a balanced diet with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to fuel your body with all of the essential nutrients.

Supplements can be expensive and may be unnecessary when consuming a varied diet that meets all your nutritional requirements. However, they can be helpful in individualised situations when these nutritional requirements cannot be met.
